Redroaster, Kemptown, Brighton

A dilapidated Post Office building was transformed into an all-day dining venue for Brighton’s oldest coffee company Redroaster, with the theme of ‘Botanical Punk’.

The project was conceived and delivered by Melbourne-based interior design studio The Stella Collective working in collaboration with Studio C102, yielding a unique blend that neither of us would have achieved in isolation.

A canopy of tropical planting over the dining areas helps to bring the outside in, creating a sense of endless summer. This is offset by overlapping grids of tiles, adorned by a giant illustration of a goat’s skull to unite the worlds of nature and punk. Key architectural interventions included opening up old skylights and replacing the dingy old fire escape with a new austere steel staircase that leads to the upstairs restrooms. Natural light floods the space, reflecting off the polished brass and marble finishes to deliver an understated
elegance with a tough edge.
